Call of Cthulhu - twoalike by Kyena Call of Cthulhu - twoalike by Kyena
Another commission for Fantasy Flight Games

I know that the light/shadow situation is a bit wonky - but I took some artistic liberty in this one - after all it's going to be even smaller on the actual card.
Once more I tried to reflect that 1930s with the color scheme and the somewhat rougher approach to fit the general feel of the Call of Cthulhu Trading Cards.

Rough sketch in photoshop then colored in about one day.

I don't know...it's say it's the doorway thats wonky. I don't know. But, if it is...it doesn't distract from the eerie concept of an evil twin/doppleganger/evil double from parallel universe or from how amazing the art is.

I actually quite like the shadow and think it adds to the atmosphere of eeriness and dread. I also think you've hit the jackpot with the angle you chose for the picture. :highfive:

well, the time spent definately shows - it's nowhere near my normal quality but then I have to paint in a slightly different style to match the overal feel of the cards :)
And I didn't know myself that I can work quite fast - comes with more experience for me, luckily

To be perfectly honest, I think the lighting looks quite fine, as does the rest of the illustration. Even if these are rougher in composition, these cards are turning out quite nicely. :D

You have my dream job. XD

Yep, deadlines are a pain. x_x I've only had a little experience with working with deadlines, but it can be frustrating, especially when things don't come as easily as one would wish.

But, anyways, good luck with everything you're working on! :D

We have the power of light, isn't it? They gave the particular needed atmosphere, you made an excellent job, I love the expression and the concept, not so used. And her projected shadow in that exact point is absolutely great.
A wonderful job

Pin curls - is that what that hairdo is called? I have no clue really..I was looking up some references for clothing and hairdo of the 1930s

Pearl necklaces are awesome! I think maybe a tiny highlight on the far girl's lower lip would look nice, though it probably won't be visible in print :D

It's so hard to tell with cards - a highlight that would actually still be seen in the card size might look totally strange and distracting.
It's totally different to paint for that small sizes. I even use totally different colors because more contrast works much better on small size illustrations.

You know how much I like the cinematic feel in paintings...awesome concept. It reminds me of when a phone rings and I ask the person about to pick up, "Hey, what if that was me on the other end????" :eyepopping:

I would increase on the contrast a little...more dynamic lighting for a dynamic angle.

:iconkyena:
Kyena Featured By Owner Nov 10, 2005  Professional Digital Artist
hehe yeah that feel sometimes creeps me out :D

hmm I might try the contrast - however the AD already approved it. The thing is - if you increase it too much it will merge the higlighted sources into one blob in the small version - and the dark ones too..it's very tricky to find a good combination for both.
