Coloring Alice and closeups by Kyena Coloring Alice and closeups by Kyena
The past few days I have been tweaking her face around to finally find a good mix between realism and the Alice as I remember her from my childhood.
It took me two days to get her face that far (you know I think even those thinking I copy pictures might get the point that I probably wouldn't have to spend two days on a face if I would do that..but anyway...) As you can see in the 100% Closeup - it is still pretty rough and needs a lot of cleanup and tweaking still. But I think I am finally on the right way to be more or less satisfied with her facial expressions

From left to right:
About the actual size of her in the magazin view / 50% Closeup / 100% Closeup (messy! >_<;)
Decided to upload this to my Deviation section because I don't like looking at those tons of steps from my spring overview thingiemajing (sorry).
The actual character sketch (without the background though) can be seen in my scraps section.

Oh hell...

The glitter in the eye, the eyebrows, the soft light on her skin and that hair...

It would take me two years, not two days...

This is very interesting to see the various levels. I took the time to visit your website and I must say I was impressed with the way you organized the information and all of the knowledge you presented in a very accessible manner. Congratulations on that. It is always impressive to me when I find someone who has wonderful art with an equally good ability to share and elaborate on their process and knowledge.
thank you.

Woa, may I ask which is the actual size of the illustration? I'm seing the 100% closeup and I cannot imagine it, sure is huge!
Maybe it looks rushed but I know with some more work it will look perfect and all detailed. I'm loving it so far, specially you usual red tones ^^ And my, you did freckles xD

It's nice to see Alice gettin' some love lately :) I like your version since it catches a hint of the older Alice sadism from the American McGee game without emulating his version. V. nice and luscious :)

I love looking at your face closeups, the way you paint them is fascinating, the wetness you get to eyes, the softness to lips. It still really blows me away that you do these without reference, and it's tremendously inspiring, as all your work is. I've always loved more erotic spins on traditional fairy tales too, so this is a double lovely whammy for me, and the balance you've achieved between ever so slightly mischievous and innocence in her expression is just genius!

awww - thanks so much Sam :)
Well about my faces..it's hard to explain how I do them. I tend to flip through magazines and then when I paint I remember a special feature. But to be honest it takes me a lot of time to tweak them around to make them not look alien. When I start coloring I might have the nose way too far or a way too high forehead..the nose too much to the left or other things.

Fact is - we can't paint anything without having it seen in any way or the other (be it fotos other paintings or a changed version). Take the little goblin I am painting. His features are actually not far from a normal face just the structure and everything underneath are much more stylized and warped to en extreme.

Also some things on a face never change and I always add them. I am definately not the best painter when it comes to faces or making tutorials about them but I plan to write some things down I always do. (Something like the color overview thing I made on my website - it's good to make such things - even for myself so I don't forget them).

For some reason my faces always start out pretty alien looking (that is specially visible when I flip them horizontally).

I can relate to everything you've written there most definitely, I've been trying to get to grips with painting without reference to hand, just the memory, like you say of having seen a certain feature or style, my latest "captive" piece being one of my better examples, but I still have a long way to go and so much to learn! I shall make sure I have your website bookmarked so I can have a peek at your tutorials. And I know what you mean about the placement of features on a face too.. sometimes you can play for hours and hours with one feature, think you hav eit in the right place, then you get the nose, for example, just right straight off and then ou realise your first feature is way off... hence I can understand why it could have taken you two days to get her face to a point where you're happy with it.

Anyhoo, before I swamp your peice with novelette replies, I'll say thanks for sharing your thoughts, I love hearing other artist's experiences!

haha exactly - then you think - hmm ok now it looks good - then you swap it and "ARGH!".
Or even better - I work on it for two hours and show it to Henning "What do you think now, looks better, right?" and he goes "What did you change?" :p

haven't followed the character from the start, but it looks like a great start to me.
Must mark that this is actaully a good example of the scaling problem.. are we painting for the 10% view or the 50%? they never, ever seems to go alongside..

keep it up. :)

that's good!
That is part of her character (phew thanks - that's honestly good to know ;))
I a totally not sure if I can actually paint those goblin guys - I have never even tried before but so far it's a lot of fun and actually not very different then painting a normal human face - or it's feature.
