Russian Pyetra by Kyena Russian Pyetra by Kyena
This is copyright Heresy Gaming

Time spent: way too long
Tools used: Adobe Photoshop CS
Victims: Right wrist and a whole bunch of my nerves.

Thanks to Henning, Squibbit and Matt (both friends from CGTalk) for help and input on the way :)

My second really involved piece with background (just shows how much more exercise I need ;))

Additional information:

Evil, cruel russian fighter elves called Pyetra - beautiful beyond anything but yeah..deadly.
Features of the elves, clothing, colors and story have all been chosen by the Art Director after some sketchin on my part.
Sorry for the blood - defined by the client.

Its the first time in my life when I'm sad that in Russian mythology there are no elves at all :)

Nice work ^_^

Wow outstandting work.
Love the facial expression and deffinately that suit.
And aren't they cold, especially with blood just trailing off like spilt paint. :D.

Wonderful background!. I love this whole image. :D Another brilliant work by Natascha (Kyena)

nice, very nice.

i envy Russia those myths, elves and so on. we have forgotten about aor Slavic beliefs (I am a Pole).

And those Hungarian jackets worn on left shoulder - quite imperial-looking :D

The dragon is fantastic. the wild scenery too. Those wilderness, fallen forgotten empires - fantastic topic for an arttist. strange alphabets, strange , unique uniforms. Cruelty, bravery and astonishing beauty.

love the uniform of the sitting elf, it just looks awesome. also love her saber, great handle (although not too detailed) there. they don't look overly russian though, kind of look french to me. :D too dark haired and dark eyed and really pale. were their looks required so by your client? I'd imagine if they were russian they'd have fairly blond or at least light brown hair with hazel/blue/green/hazel-brown eyes and almost asian skin that's tinted yellow rather then pink or pale. what sources did you use for the uniform jacket? because it looks really russian, like the old kind that the cavelry wore, namely 'gusar' cavelry if i'm not mistaken or mispelling it. really cool uniforms.
Kyena Featured By Owner Jan 27, 2007  Professional Digital Artist
They were supposed to look russian yet elvish dark and a bit cruel. I can't really remember if they requested dark hair or not :/
The uniforms had to look like hussarian - they client had a really detailed idea of what they have to look like :)

I figured it out, it's the jawline! Russians have a more asian and angled jawline then Europeans in general. Rather then connecting straight, the jawbone would make an angle and make the face rounder. Their faces are rounder rather then oval. Plus, they'll have high cheek bones, like your elves do. :D Course, my general assumptions are mostly based on my mother because her appearance is representative of Eastern Slavs except her dark brown eyes. I've seen a lot of Russian who apear very different from my description, but they will have a lot of Sweedish or Middle Eastern or Jewish or asian blood. So your elves just look like they've got lots of Sweedish blood! :D They look like my grandma when she was young.

Lovely. the dragon and the gold details on the clothes are what do it for me in this piece. Great work with the snow too, couldn't have been easy.

I wish that was's definately not. Struggled with this piece way too much (maybe because I haven't seen snow in a while ;))
mystikaal Featured By Owner Mar 19, 2006
Lovely and sexy ladies. Is the seated one handless, or am I just not seeing them? I actually think the background looks quite that dragon. I like the little details like the pattern on the scabbard and the textures on their sashes. Where can I get a pair of those boots? Must have! :XD:
Kyena Featured By Owner Mar 19, 2006  Professional Digital Artist
nope - her right (from our view) is inside that golden sword hilt thing - ther arm is covered by the jacket she is wearing over her shoulder (and she is wearing black gloves with pelt.

The other one is holding the cleaning cloth but you only see two fingers of her black glove. the lower left arm is covered by the cloth too.
The both are actually nothing special - I have a pair of similar ones in light brown ;)
mystikaal Featured By Owner Apr 14, 2006
Ahhhh, now I see them. lol, I was wondering how she could be an assassin with no hands.

Well, practice pays at least.... *goes and practice til the end of her life*

Amazing work, it's really... amazing.
JoseHerb Featured By Owner Mar 15, 2006  Professional Traditional Artist
It look great. But the blood throws off the composition. It draws my eye to the point where I think there is something exciting happening off frame. I know you didn't have any choice about it, but your client should know better.
KnP Featured By Owner Mar 15, 2006
Really great! Ilike the atmosphere here, snowy, windy cold (looking outside the window... the same XD) those elfs are georgous, espesially their clothing. And the boots, but I don't think that high-hills are comfortable in this snowy area XD But, hey, their elves, so maybe they are XD And the dragon is great ^^

Only thing I don't like is the moutain. Well I don't mind mountain beeing there, but it looks like low-resolution photo scaled to be bigger. But that might be becouse you had to make the picture smaller. But it's still great ^^
Feigh Featured By Owner Mar 15, 2006
Beautifull. I reall love how the cloths look. Thouse jackets ae really nice even though I have my doubts about the boots :XD: but hey! they'r elfs! The background looks really great even if it isn't as detailed as the girls. Great
Kyena Featured By Owner Mar 15, 2006  Professional Digital Artist
thanks and hm? what kind of doubts? :D
Feigh Featured By Owner Mar 16, 2006
More the doubts about running around in snow and ice. In highheels... Ouch. But if it was a commission it's understandable. But it's very nicely drawn highheel boots. :)
DeathRetsu Featured By Owner Mar 14, 2006
Very lovely. The BG, especially the snowy mountains and the cold sky is painted so so nicely. The girls are just plain beautiful. It has a sort of traditional feel to it too. Random remark, I love the boots on the girls and how they are painted. I dunno why.
