Excellent news but not before 2011-12 at best because he just agreed to direct The Hobbit while havinf already 2 other movies in the workshop... It's been the 4th times he postponed the Lovecraft movie !! aaaaugh !!! But yes, he's probably the only one actually being able to pull it off imho !
We had been reading for awhile that there were speculations DT would go for a Loveraft movie. Im so glad it's finally happening. He's the perfect director for such a great story. He has the ability to do horror right, and not just fill the screen with bloody teenagers..bleh. We are big Lovecraft fans, so to see a really great modern telling of one of his best stories is going to be amazing.
I wouldn't hold my breath. He has been pitching this project for several years now, and now that it seems he'll be directing the Hobbit (which would be all kinds of awesome), I seriously doubt we'll see his Lovecraft movie for another three to five years, if at all.
There is simply no way it could possibly happen for 2010 if he's directing the Hobbit, which is almost a fact by now (Hell, it was basically confirmed by himself at the french premiere of The Orpanaghe, that spanish film he produced). Looks like his HP film will be delayed yet again. I don't doubt he'll do it, but it'll be a while.
Wow. Great news! I knew years ago that making the "Mountains of Madness" was one of Del Toro's dreams. The other one was making Hellboy. So, he's a lucky man who makes his dream come true... and steals them from others. Yeah, being a great Lovecraft fan myself, since I was a kid, my dream when I started getting into film-making was to be the first to bring a faithful adaptation of Lovecraft to the big screen... one less on my list. Sorry about the rambling. Thanks for sharing the news. I'd PAY to work in that movie.
Actually there are two not so bad Cthulhu inspired movies I really like: The Thing and Into the Mount of Madness. But no one really attempted it yet so I am really looking forward to this. I was just talking about that how suprised I am not more Directors tried their hands on Cthulhu Material. Specially now that the license is open. I am sorry that you can't try your hands on that now. Any chance of getting a job with Tel Toro's team?
You should try and find a copy of The Resurrected. It's based off of a Lovecraft story called "The Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward" I think. The Resurrected is one of the creepiest movies you'll ever see. I woke up in the middle of the night once and happened to see a scene of it on tv...scared me so bad I had to turn the lamp on and I couldnt get back to sleep! It's one of my favorites
Yes, there are quite a bunch of lovecraft-inspired movies (many of them not that good) but haven't seen a real "adaptation". It's powerful material, so I am surprised too that it hasn't been tried before. I might make a Lovecraft-inspried short film one day, wich is more on my league.
Honestly, I have no idea how to go about tryint to get a job on Del Toro's film, or I would be doing all I can. As I said, I'd work on it from passion alone, without even getting paid.
By the way, I had no idea you liked Lovecraft. Makes you an even more interesting person, wich you were enough already. You must have gotten excited (like I did) when Henning started painting tentacles everywhere.
